Barritshayes is set in 8 acres of gardens and fields amongst the stunning scenery of the Coly Valley, East Devon. There are panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys where there is an abundance of flora and fauna. The famous Jurassic Coastline is only 4 miles away with towering cliffs and picturesque fishing harbours and there are typical Devon villages with their stone and thatch cottages, jumbled streets and ancient churches.  In short there’s plenty subjects to paint at Barritshayes and in the immediate vicinity; and even more for our ‘days out’.

Alexandra is a highly qualified, inspirational teacher and artist, exhibiting and selling her work throughout the south-west. She will produce a schedule of what she would like to cover each day. The aim would be to paint outside most of the time but if the weather is bad we have a large studio area in which to work. The following is an example of a typical painting programme:

The painting programme is designed for those who have some painting experience.

The aim is to paint and sketch out of doors as much as possible.  This will be done in the friendly company of a small group.

Tuition will take the form of group tutorials and individual attention.  Each student will be encouraged to work to their full capacity whatever their level of experience.

Location: The courtyard, buildings and views from Barritshayes are an artist’s delight. Picturesque villages, coastal scenes and the fishing harbour at Beer are all within easy reach for days out.

The painting day: will start at about 10 a.m.   Lunch at 1.00pm with a further painting session from approximately 2 to 4

Studio – Liz can provide a digital camera which can be used to print copies of your subject for painting in the studio should the weather dictate.

The accommodation is either in our ETC 4* rated cottages or in the farmhouse where there are three double bedrooms (single occupancy only).   Each cottage has one double bedroom, one twin or bunk bedroom and a double sofa bed in the sitting room.  We will not ask you to share a cottage except at your request (ie friends or couples).  They are fitted and equipped to a high standard and have private gardens with barbeques and garden furniture.   For relaxation after a hard day’s painting we have an outside heated swimming pool (open beginning of May to end October), and tennis court.

A tasty lunch will be provided each day and a ‘welcome meal’ on your arrival on Friday evening (2.5 day course) and Sunday evening (4 day course).  Breakfast is also provided in the farmhouse whether you are in a cottage or the house and other evening meals will be left up to you but could be barbeque, pub meal or self catering.
