| Barritshayes is set in 8 acres of gardens and paddocks
amongst the stunning scenery of the Coly Valley, East Devon. There
are panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys where there
is an abundance of wild flowers, birds and wildlife. The famous
Jurassic Coastline is only 4 miles away with towering cliffs and
picturesque fishing harbours and there are typical Devon villages
with their stone and thatch cottages, jumbled streets and ancient
churches. In short there’s plenty subjects to paint at Barritshayes
and in the immediate vicinity; and even more for our ‘days out’.

Alexandra is a
highly qualified, inspirational art teacher. She will produce a
schedule of what she would like to cover each day. The aim would be
to paint outside most of the time but if the weather is bad we have
a large studio area in which to work.
The following is
an example of a typical painting programme: WATERCOLOURS AND
MIXED MEDIA The painting
programme: is designed for those who have some
painting experience and are familiar with water-based media.
The aim: is to paint
and sketch out of doors as much as possible. This will be done in
the friendly company of a small
group. Tuition: This will take
the form of group tutorials and individual attention. Each student
will be encouraged to work to their full capacity whatever their
level of experience. Location:
The courtyard, buildings and views from Barritshayes are an artist’s
delight. Visits can be arranged further
afield. |
 |
Picturesque villages,
coastal scenes and the fishing harbour at Beer are all within easy
reach. The painting
day: will start at about
10 a.m. Lunch at 12.30 with a further painting session from
approximately 1.30 to 3 p.m. Times can be arranged to be flexible to
accommodate the weather and other activities.
Materials
required : You will need to bring
your watercolour paints and brushes. A painting pad or block of
paper suitable for working out of doors. A small sketchpad and a 2B
and 4B pencil and putty rubber.
|
If you do not
have a viewer you will be shown how to
make one. A water- resistant pen (Pilot pens are good) or pen and
Indian ink, one tube of white gouache and soft pastels if you have
them.Please bring a small folding
chair or stool, waterproof coat. Drawing boards will be provided for
your use. Also water bottles for water
and some cartridge paper, crayons and inks for studio work. Easels
are optional. There will be some at the
Farm. Studio - Liz can provide
a digital camera which can be used to print copies of your subject
for painting in the studio should the weather dictate.

The
accommodation is self catering in our
cottages. Each cottage has one double bedroom, one twin or bunk
bedroom and a double sofa bed in the sitting room. They have just
been refurbished and have new kitchens, microwave, washer/dryer,
t.v./video, hi-fi, central heating, barbeques and their own small
gardens. For relaxation after a hard day’s painting we have an
outside heated swimming pool (open beginning of May to end
October), games room and tennis court. Ploughman’s lunch will be
provided each day and a ‘welcome meal’ on your arrival on Sunday
evening (4 day course). Breakfast will be self catering in the
cottages and evening meals will be left up to you but could be
barbeque, pub meal or self catering.
|
You
would arrive on Sunday afternoon (after 3pm please) and a full
evening meal will be provided for you as a welcome to Barritshayes.
Alexandra will be teaching morning and afternoon from Monday to
Thursday, although if you’d rather not paint all the time you can
have a morning/afternoon off to explore the area. Departure is on
Friday before 10am. Weekend painters would arrive Friday morning
after 10am and depart Sunday evening. This will enable us to have
tuition Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and all day
Sunday. Prices: (to include accommodation,
tuition and other items mentioned above)
4 day courses - £295 per person, weekend
(2.5 days) - £190 per person. Non painting partners are
